History of the Community

Congregation Beth Shalom has served the spiritual needs of the Jewish population of this area since 1918. We moved to our present facility on Sherwood Avenue in 1963. In 1980, a new wing containing classrooms, a youth sanctuary, and a multipurpose room were added.

Congregation Beth Shalom is affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and every effort is made to serve the needs of the whole spectrum of interested Jewish residents of our area. CBS is a warm and welcoming congregation serving the greater Stanislaus/San Joaquin area, providing a host of religious, educational, and social programs geared to the needs of its members.

Through religious, educational, cultural, and social activities, it is our aim to instill in our members a common bond of mitzvot (ethical values and actions). Women enjoy full and equal participation in all aspects of our congregational life. The Synagogue is always busy with activities and opportunities for creative Jewish living in a warm, sharing, and stimulating environment. We take particular pride in the feeling of the extended family, which is offered to newcomers, who are seeking to deepen their ties to their faith and with other Jews.

At the core of our existence is our commitment to Jewish values. In that spirit, we invite and encourage the fullest participation of every interested member in all aspects of synagogue life. As a congregation and as individuals, we can make the greatest contribution to the community.
